NHS Seasonal COVID-19 Vaccination Programme

The NHS runs an autumn and winter COVID-19 vaccination programme each year for people at higher risk of serious illness from the virus. The 2026/27 programme is expected to open in the autumn, in line with previous years. Exact start dates and eligibility criteria are confirmed by the NHS and UK Health Security Agency ahead of each season, so we recommend checking the current guidance before booking.

Based on the criteria used in recent seasons, groups typically eligible for a free NHS seasonal COVID-19 vaccine include:

  • Adults aged 75 and over
  • Residents in care homes for older adults
  • People aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed

Woodstock Road Chemist is licensed to vaccinate patients aged 18 and over. Parents or carers of children under 18 who fall into an eligible group should contact their GP practice or local NHS vaccination service.

Patients registered with a GP surgery in England can book an NHS COVID-19 vaccination through the NHS National Booking Service, which will confirm current eligibility, vaccine brand, and appointment availability.

Private COVID-19 Vaccination

For anyone who is not currently eligible for a free NHS vaccine, or who would prefer to book privately, Woodstock Road Chemist offers a private COVID-19 vaccination service, generally available on a same-day basis.

Vaccine brand: Pfizer

Suitability: This service is intended for people aged 12 and over.

The private vaccine is not suitable for anyone who:

  • Has had a COVID-19 vaccination within the last 3 months
  • Has had a serious allergic reaction to a previous injection or vaccination

This is not a complete list of exclusions. A pharmacist will carry out a full suitability check with each patient before administering the vaccine.

Current pricing is confirmed at the time of booking, since vaccine costs can change between seasons.

Addressing Concerns About the Vaccine

It’s natural to have questions about any vaccine, and our pharmacists are happy to talk through individual concerns before you book.

Safety and monitoring

COVID-19 vaccines used in the UK go through the same rigorous approval process as other licensed vaccines, overseen by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Vaccine safety continues to be monitored on an ongoing basis through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Pharmacy staff are trained to recognise and manage side effects, which is why patients are asked to wait briefly after vaccination before leaving

What most people experience

  • Mild, short-lived side effects, such as a sore arm, tiredness, or a mild headache
  • Symptoms usually pass within a day or two
  • Serious side effects are rare

Why vaccination matters

For people in higher-risk groups, including older adults and those who are immunosuppressed, vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the chance of severe illness, hospitalisation, or complications from COVID-19. Even for those at lower risk, staying up to date with vaccination helps reduce transmission within the wider community, including to family members or others who may be more vulnerable.

If you’re travelling abroad, some countries may also require or recommend proof of COVID-19 vaccination for entry, so it’s worth checking current requirements for your destination before you go.

If you have specific medical concerns, for example around allergies, pregnancy, or existing health conditions, our pharmacist can discuss these with you individually before your appointment to help you make an informed decision.

Flu Vaccination

Flu and COVID-19 share several symptoms, and both viruses tend to circulate more widely during autumn and winter. Woodstock Road Chemist also offers flu vaccinations, and patients can choose to have both vaccines during the same appointment where clinically appropriate. Flu vaccine availability typically runs from October each year.

How to Book

You can book a private appointment online at a time that suits you. When booking:

  • Select the appropriate service for a COVID-19 vaccine alone, or a combined flu and COVID-19 appointment, if both are available in that booking window
  • You will be asked to complete a short patient screening form before your appointment; allow a few extra minutes to complete this if you have not done so in advance
  • Bring photo ID and, if relevant, evidence of any previous vaccinations

If you are eligible for a free NHS vaccine, book through the NHS National Booking Service rather than the private service.

Additionally, call us on 01865515226 if you have any questions, or visit us at 59 Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6HJ.

Vaccination remains one of the main tools available for reducing the risk of serious illness from COVID-19, particularly for people in higher-risk groups. Whether you are eligible for a free NHS vaccine or choose to book privately, Woodstock Road Chemist can support you with a same-day appointment, subject to availability. If you are unsure whether you’re eligible for the NHS programme, or which option is right for you, our pharmacy team can advise you.

FAQs

Get answers to common questions we receive about Covid-19 vaccination

Protection against symptomatic infection typically declines over several months, though protection against severe illness tends to last longer. This is why seasonal booster doses are offered to higher-risk groups each autumn and winter, ahead of periods when respiratory viruses circulate more widely.

Most people experience mild, short-term effects such as soreness at the injection site, tiredness, headache, or mild fever, usually resolving within a day or two. Serious allergic reactions are rare, which is why patients are asked to remain at the pharmacy for a short observation period after vaccination.

Yes, having both vaccines at the same appointment, in different arms, is generally considered safe and is commonly offered where both services are available. A pharmacist will confirm suitability during your screening.

It is helpful to bring any vaccination record you have, particularly to confirm the date of your last dose, since a minimum interval between doses is required. If you do not have a record, the pharmacist can discuss your vaccination history with you before your appointment.

COVID-19 vaccination is generally recommended during pregnancy, as pregnant women can be at higher risk of complications from the virus. However, individual suitability should always be confirmed with a pharmacist or your midwife or GP before booking, particularly for private appointments.

The NHS seasonal programme is free but restricted to specific eligible groups defined by the UK Health Security Agency each year. The private service at Woodstock Road Chemist is open to anyone aged 12 and over who does not currently qualify for the NHS programme, or who would prefer not to wait for their eligible season, at the cost of the vaccine and appointment.

If you currently have COVID-19 symptoms, a high temperature, or another acute illness, it is generally recommended to postpone your vaccination appointment until you have recovered. Contact the pharmacy in advance to rearrange your booking rather than attending while unwell.
