Sinusitis Treatment in Oxford
If you are suffering from facial pain, pressure, a blocked nose or other symptoms of sinusitis, our pharmacists at Woodstock Road Chemist in Oxford may be able to help through the NHS Pharmacy First service.
Pharmacy First allows eligible adults and children aged 12 years and over with symptoms of acute sinusitis to be assessed by a community pharmacist without always needing to see a GP first.
Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms, consider how long you have been unwell and determine the most appropriate next step. This could include self-care advice, symptom relief or, where clinically appropriate, prescription treatment through the NHS Pharmacy First pathway.

What Is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis, sometimes called a sinus infection, is swelling and inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. The sinuses are small air-filled spaces located behind your cheekbones and forehead that connect to the inside of your nose.
When the lining of the sinuses becomes swollen, mucus may not drain normally. This can leave you feeling congested and cause uncomfortable pressure or pain around the face.
Acute sinusitis commonly develops after a cold or flu and is usually caused by a viral infection. Most cases improve without antibiotics, although symptoms can sometimes last for several weeks.
What Are the Symptoms of Sinusitis?
Sinusitis can cause a range of symptoms. Common signs include:
- Pain, swelling or tenderness around the cheeks, eyes or forehead
- A blocked or runny nose
- Green or yellow mucus from the nose
- A reduced sense of smell
- Headache
- Facial pressure or discomfort
- Toothache
- Bad breath
- A cough
- A high temperature
- A feeling of pressure in the ears
Sinusitis often develops after a cold or flu. If your symptoms are persistent, severe or getting worse, speak to our pharmacy team for advice.
Sinusitis Treatment Through NHS Pharmacy First
The NHS Pharmacy First service enables community pharmacists to assess and manage acute sinusitis in eligible adults and children aged 12 years and over.
You can contact or visit the pharmacy directly, meaning you do not always need to arrange a GP appointment before receiving an assessment.
1. Speak to Our Pharmacy Team
Tell us about your symptoms, when they started and whether they have been improving or getting worse. We may also ask about any medicines you are currently taking and your medical history.
2. Pharmacist Assessment
Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and determine whether they are consistent with acute sinusitis. They will also check for any symptoms or risk factors that may mean you need further medical assessment.
3. Advice and Treatment
Depending on your symptoms and the NHS clinical pathway, our pharmacist may provide self-care advice, recommend appropriate symptom relief or supply prescription treatment where clinically appropriate.
4. Follow-Up Advice
We’ll explain what to expect, how to manage your symptoms and when you should return to the pharmacy or seek further medical advice if your condition does not improve.
How Long Does Sinusitis Last?
Acute sinusitis usually gets better on its own. NHS guidance advises that sinusitis commonly clears within around 4 weeks, although many people begin to feel better sooner.
The NHS Pharmacy First clinical pathway also notes that acute sinusitis commonly takes around 2 to 3 weeks to resolve. Because it is usually caused by a virus, antibiotics are not routinely required.
If your symptoms have lasted for more than 12 weeks, this may be considered chronic sinusitis and is outside the acute sinusitis Pharmacy First pathway. You may need assessment by another healthcare professional.
Does Sinusitis Need Antibiotics?
Not usually. Most cases of acute sinusitis are caused by viral infections rather than bacteria, which means antibiotics are unlikely to provide significant benefit.
The NHS Pharmacy First pathway states that bacterial infection complicates only a small proportion of acute sinusitis cases. Our pharmacist will therefore assess your symptoms carefully before deciding whether prescription treatment is appropriate.
Depending on the assessment, treatment may include self-care measures or a nasal corticosteroid. Antibiotics may be considered in certain circumstances where the clinical criteria are met.
Antibiotics will only be supplied where they are clinically appropriate and in accordance with the NHS Pharmacy First pathway.
How Can I Help Sinusitis at Home?
Mild sinusitis can often be managed with simple self-care measures while your body recovers.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Use suitable pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen where appropriate.
- Avoid smoking.
- Avoid known allergy triggers where possible.
- Keep your nose clean and consider using a suitable saline nasal rinse.
A pharmacist can also advise you about medicines that may help relieve your symptoms and whether they are suitable for you.
When Should I Seek Further Medical Help?
Most people with sinusitis recover without complications, but some symptoms require further medical attention.
You should seek urgent medical advice if you are very unwell, your symptoms become significantly worse or suitable pain relief is not helping.
More serious warning signs can include swelling or redness around the eye, changes to vision, severe frontal headache, swelling over the forehead or neurological symptoms. These require urgent medical assessment.
You should also speak to your GP if you keep getting sinusitis, your symptoms have not improved after several weeks or you have symptoms affecting only one side of your face for a prolonged period.
Our pharmacists will assess whether Pharmacy First is suitable for you and will advise you if another healthcare service is more appropriate.
Can Children Use Pharmacy First for Sinusitis?
Yes, but the NHS Pharmacy First acute sinusitis pathway is only available for children and young people aged 12 years and over.
If your child is aged 11 years or younger and you think they may have sinusitis, NHS guidance recommends speaking to their GP rather than using the Pharmacy First sinusitis pathway.
If you are unsure where to seek treatment for your child, speak to our pharmacy team and we can advise you on the most appropriate next step.
