MenB Vaccine
Private MenB Vaccine Assessment in Oxford
Meningococcal group B disease is uncommon, but it can develop rapidly and cause meningitis or sepsis. Although MenB vaccination forms part of the NHS childhood programme, some older children and adults may want or be advised to consider private vaccination.
Woodstock Road Chemist provides individual assessments and access to the MenB vaccine in Oxford for eligible people. We will review your age, health, previous vaccinations and reason for requesting protection before deciding whether the vaccine is suitable.
What Does the MenB Vaccine Protect Against?
The MenB vaccine helps protect against meningococcal group B bacteria, which can cause meningitis or septicaemia and lead to sepsis. These infections can become life-threatening very quickly and require urgent hospital treatment.
Meningococcal bacteria can be carried harmlessly at the back of the nose and throat. They can spread through respiratory droplets during close or prolonged contact, such as living in the same household, kissing or sharing accommodation.
The vaccine does not protect against every meningococcal group or every cause of meningitis and sepsis. MenACWY is a separate vaccine covering meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y. Receiving one does not provide the protection offered by the other.
Who May Consider Private MenB Vaccination?
Private MenB vaccination may be considered by eligible people who are not covered by an NHS offer or who want additional protection following an individual assessment. It may be relevant for:
- -> Older children or teenagers who did not receive MenB vaccination during infancy
- -> Students preparing to live in shared university or college accommodation
- -> Adults who want to discuss protection against meningococcal group B disease
- -> People with certain health conditions that increase their risk of meningococcal infection
- -> Laboratory workers who may be exposed to meningococcal bacteria through their occupation
- -> Someone advised to consider vaccination following a public-health risk assessment
Not everyone in these groups will necessarily require private vaccination. Age, existing protection, individual risk and the pharmacy’s service protocol will determine whether it can be offered.
For travellers, MenB vaccination does not replace any destination-specific MenACWY recommendation or certificate requirement, including requirements that may apply to Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.

Can You Receive the MenB Vaccine on the NHS?
The MenB vaccine is routinely provided to babies through the NHS vaccination schedule. Children are normally offered doses at eight weeks, 12 weeks and one year of age. A child who has missed a routine dose may still be eligible through their GP, depending on their age and circumstances.
The NHS may also offer MenB vaccination to certain people with medical or occupational risks. In addition, a time-limited NHS programme currently covers specified young people and some students starting university or eligible further-education courses in autumn 2026.
Because NHS criteria and catch-up programmes can change, check your eligibility before paying privately. Current NHS MenB vaccine guidance explains the routine childhood schedule and any active offers for young people.
How Many MenB Vaccine Doses Are Needed?
Many adolescents and adults receiving private MenB vaccination require a course of two injections. However, the number of doses and interval between them depend on age, vaccine product, previous vaccination and individual risk.
Babies and young children may follow a different schedule. People with certain ongoing medical or occupational risks may also need additional doses or boosters. The healthcare professional will follow current clinical guidance and the pharmacy’s service protocol rather than using the same schedule for every person.
What Happens During A MenB Vaccine Appointment?
Your appointment begins with an individual suitability assessment. Please be ready to discuss:
- -> Your age and reason for requesting MenB vaccination
- -> Previous MenB, MenACWY and other meningococcal vaccines
- -> Medical conditions, allergies and current medicines
- -> Previous reactions to vaccines or their ingredients
- -> Whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding or currently unwell
- -> Any NHS, university, workplace or public-health recommendation
If vaccination is clinically appropriate, the MenB vaccine is given as an injection. Our healthcare professional will explain the proposed course, expected benefits, limitations, possible side effects and aftercare.

What Side Effects Can the MenB Vaccine Cause?
MenB vaccine side effects are usually mild and improve within a few days. Depending on age, they may include:
- -> Pain, redness or swelling where the injection was given
- -> Headache, tiredness or aching muscles
- -> A raised temperature or chills
- -> Irritability or reduced appetite in younger children
- -> Nausea, diarrhoea or generally feeling unwell
Serious allergic reactions are very rare. Fever is particularly common when MenB vaccination is given to babies alongside other routine vaccines. Parents should follow the specific advice provided by the NHS or vaccinating healthcare professional about children’s paracetamol. Do not give medicine preventively unless advised to do so.
When to Seek Urgent Help for Meningitis or Sepsis
Vaccinated people can still develop meningitis or sepsis from organisms not covered by the vaccine. Possible warning signs include a high temperature, severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, vomiting, confusion, unusual drowsiness, seizures, rapid breathing or a rash that does not fade when pressed.
Symptoms can appear in any order, and a rash may not develop. Babies may also be difficult to wake, refuse feeds, have a high-pitched cry or develop a tense or bulging soft spot on the head.
The NHS advice on meningitis symptoms recommends calling 999 or going to A&E immediately if meningitis or sepsis is suspected. Do not wait for every symptom to appear.
