About the Vaccine

The flu vaccine used in our private service is updated annually to target the influenza strains expected to be most common in the coming season. Because flu viruses change year on year and immunity fades over time, vaccination is recommended annually rather than as a one-off.

Suitability: This service is intended for people aged 18 and over.

The private vaccine is not suitable for anyone who:

  • Has had a serious allergic reaction to a previous flu vaccine or any of its ingredients
  • Is currently unwell with a high temperature

This is not a complete list of exclusions. A pharmacist will carry out a full suitability check with each patient before administering the vaccine.

Current pricing is confirmed at the time of booking, since vaccine costs can change between seasons.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Private flu vaccination appointments are quick and straightforward. Before your vaccine, a pharmacist will ask you a short set of screening questions to confirm suitability. The injection itself takes only a moment, and you’ll be asked to wait briefly afterwards before leaving, as a standard precaution.

Combining with a COVID-19 Vaccine

If you’d also like a COVID-19 vaccine, this can often be given during the same appointment, in a different arm, subject to availability and suitability. Let us know when booking if you’d like both vaccines together.

Addressing Concerns About the Vaccine

It’s natural to have questions before booking a private vaccination, and our pharmacists are happy to talk through any concerns.

Safety and monitoring

  • Flu vaccines used in the UK are approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and have a long-established safety record
  • Vaccine safety continues to be monitored on an ongoing basis through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme
  • Pharmacy staff are trained to recognise and manage side effects, which is why patients are asked to wait briefly after vaccination before leaving

What most people experience

  • Mild, short-lived side effects, such as a sore arm, tiredness, or a mild headache
  • Symptoms usually pass within a day or two
  • Serious side effects are rare

Why private vaccination can be worthwhile

  • You don’t need to wait for an NHS-eligible category or appointment slot to be protected
  • Booking privately can mean earlier protection, ahead of peak flu season
  • It offers flexibility if your NHS appointment falls at an inconvenient time, or if you’d prefer a specific date

If you have specific medical concerns, for example around allergies, pregnancy, or existing health conditions, our pharmacist can discuss these with you individually before your appointment to help you make an informed decision.

FAQs

Get answers to common questions we receive about flu vaccination

Mild illness, such as a cold without a fever, is not usually a reason to postpone your flu vaccine. However, if you have a high temperature or feel significantly unwell, it’s best to wait until you’ve recovered and rearrange your appointment for a later date.

It typically takes around 10 to 14 days for the flu vaccine to provide full protection, as this is how long the body needs to build an immune response. This is one reason why vaccination earlier in the season, before flu becomes widespread, is generally recommended.

No, the flu vaccines used in the UK do not contain live virus and cannot cause flu. Some people experience mild, flu-like symptoms such as tiredness or a slight temperature in the day or two afterwards, which is the immune system responding to the vaccine rather than an infection.

Yes, annual vaccination is recommended because flu viruses change from year to year, and the vaccine is reformulated each season to match the strains expected to circulate. Immunity from a previous year’s vaccine also naturally declines over time.

The flu vaccine is generally recommended during pregnancy, as pregnant women can be at higher risk of complications from flu. As with any vaccination during pregnancy, suitability should be confirmed with a pharmacist, midwife, or GP beforehand.

Some flu vaccines are manufactured using egg-based processes, though egg-free alternatives are also available. It’s important to mention any egg allergy when booking, so the pharmacist can confirm which vaccine is appropriate or advise on the best course of action.
