MenACWY Vaccine
Vaccine Support in Oxford
Some journeys bring travellers into close contact with large numbers of people, increasing the importance of protection against meningococcal disease. For Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, evidence of MenACWY vaccination may also be a condition of travel rather than simply a health recommendation.
Woodstock Road Chemist provides personalised advice and access to the MenACWY vaccine in Oxford for eligible travellers. We can review your plans and vaccination history, assess clinical suitability and explain the documentation you may need to carry.
What Does the MenACWY Vaccine Protect Against?
Meningococcal disease is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria. It can lead to meningitis, which affects the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, or septicaemia, a serious bloodstream infection.
The MenACWY vaccine helps protect against four meningococcal groups: A, C, W and Y. It does not protect against every cause of meningitis or against meningococcal group B, so travellers should still recognise the warning signs of serious illness.
Meningococcal bacteria can spread through respiratory droplets and close or prolonged contact. Crowded accommodation, mass gatherings and sharing living spaces may increase exposure. The infection can develop rapidly and requires urgent medical treatment.

Who May Need MenACWY Vaccination for Travel?
A healthcare professional may recommend meningococcal ACWY vaccination based on your destination, activities, accommodation, health and previous doses. It may be relevant for:
- -> Travellers attending Hajj or Umrah in Saudi Arabia
- -> Seasonal workers travelling to designated Hajj areas
- -> People visiting a country or region experiencing a meningococcal outbreak
- -> Travellers spending extended periods in parts of the African meningitis belt
- -> People likely to have prolonged close contact with residents or stay in crowded accommodation
- -> Travellers with certain medical conditions that increase their risk of meningococcal disease
Many people in the UK received MenACWY vaccination through the routine adolescent programme. However, a previous dose does not automatically meet every current travel recommendation or certificate requirement. Bring any available vaccination records so the date and product can be checked.
MenACWY Requirements for Hajj and Umrah
Saudi Arabia sets health requirements for pilgrims and publishes updated guidance for each season. Current UK government advice for Hajj and Umrah states that travellers must hold a valid certificate showing vaccination against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y.
The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival. A certificate for a quadrivalent conjugate vaccine is generally valid for five years from the vaccination date. If the certificate does not identify the vaccine type, it may be treated as valid for only three years.
Requirements can change, so confirm the current rules for your dates and circumstances before travelling. Your certificate should accurately record your full name, vaccine name and type, vaccination date and the details of the healthcare professional or clinic providing it. Keep the original document accessible during your journey.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
Our healthcare professional will carry out an individual assessment before offering vaccination. Please bring your itinerary, departure date and vaccination history. We will also ask about:
- -> The reason for travel and the places you intend to visit
- -> The length of your stay and type of accommodation
- -> Any previous MenACWY vaccine and when it was administered
- -> Medical conditions, allergies and current medicines
- -> Previous reactions to vaccines and whether you are currently unwell
The MenACWY vaccine is usually given as a single injection. The healthcare professional will explain the expected benefits, limitations, possible side effects and aftercare before obtaining your consent. Temporary soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, headache, tiredness or a raised temperature may occur, although not everyone experiences these effects.
If you have any concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our expert team.
Reducing Infection Risk in Crowded Settings
Vaccination is important, but it does not prevent every respiratory infection or every form of meningitis. During pilgrimages, events and other crowded journeys:
- -> Wash your hands regularly or use hand sanitiser when soap and water are unavailable
- -> Avoid sharing drinks, bottles, cups, eating utensils, cigarettes or vapes
- -> Cover coughs and sneezes and dispose of used tissues promptly
- -> Avoid close contact with people who are visibly unwell where practical
- -> Seek medical advice promptly if you develop concerning symptoms
Your travel assessment can also cover other health needs associated with your destination. For pilgrims, these may include routine vaccinations, influenza, hepatitis B, heat precautions, food and water safety, and managing existing medical conditions during physically demanding travel.
Know the Signs That Require Urgent Help
Possible symptoms of meningitis or septicaemia include a high temperature, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, sensitivity to light, unusual drowsiness, confusion, seizures, rapid breathing, cold hands and feet, or a rash that does not fade when pressed.
Symptoms can appear in any order, and a rash may not develop. Do not wait for every symptom or for a rash before seeking help. The NHS guidance on meningitis symptoms advises calling 999 or going to A&E immediately if meningitis or septicaemia is suspected.
If you become unwell during or after travel, obtain urgent medical assistance and explain where you have been. Vaccination reduces risk from the covered groups but cannot rule out meningitis.
